Tree Pruning

treebar.gif (1534 bytes)

Pruning is defined as the selective removal of plant parts for a purpose.  There are four major reasons for pruning: health, safety, appearance and production.  Removal of crowded branches in order to increase air circulation through the tree is thinning for the health of the tree.  If you increase the air flow you will decrease the chances of the branches breaking or even the tree falling over.  Some trees need to have corrective pruning done due to incorrect pruning methods by a previous person.

Safety pruning is done by most, if not all, arborists.  Safety pruning includes pruning for utility lines, street trees and dead or dangerous wood that could fall and cause injury.  Poor pruning practices can and do weaken trees.

Around homes and formal gardens pruning is done to improve ornamental quality or appearance.  Pruning for appearance requires that you have an understanding of the science of pruning and an artistic eye.  This would include shaping small to large trees, hedges and bushes.

Pruning can also be used to increase a tree's production of fruit and flowers.
